Categories based on what already ranks
We study which categories the businesses ranking for your main Kingston searches have chosen, then settle on a primary and a few secondary ones that fit what you really do.
A large share of Kingston suggestions carry a clock: “kingston open now”, “kingston walk in clinic saturday”, “pizza kingston open now”, “kingston events tonight”. Google answers those with a small panel of pins showing hours, distance and star rating, and plenty of people make their choice from that panel without opening a single website. If the hours shown there are wrong, you are, for that searcher, closed.
Kingston is also more spread out than its compact downtown suggests. The 1998 amalgamation brought large rural areas north of Highway 401 into the city, and our service area stretches to Amherstview, Odessa, Bath and Gananoque. A customer might be heading for the big stores on Gardiners Road, a shop on Division Street or a business out past the highway, so the pin, the service area and the directions on your profile have to work for someone following them from behind the wheel.
The seasons add a layer that many owners forget. Patios and boat tours open for a short summer, hours shift around FebFest, Homecoming and the holidays, and a winter storm can shut a business for a day. A profile reviewed monthly keeps up; one filled in once and forgotten does not.
Search demand
Pulled from Google.ca autocomplete in October 2026. Every add-on word assumes a detail on your profile is already right.
Count the modifiers: open now, saturday, near 401, Division Street, Gardiners Road, Cataraqui. Every one assumes your profile already shows the right hours, the right pin and the right address. A listing still showing last winter’s hours, or a pin dropped in the middle of a parking lot, loses those searches whatever its rating. We fix the facts first and only then work on the signals that lift you up the list.
Check these first
Ordered by how often they turn up when we audit a profile.
Christmas, Family Day, Thanksgiving, a FebFest weekend, a snow day. If the profile still shows the usual hours, Google may tell people you are open when the door is locked. Holiday and storm hours belong on the profile before the day comes.
Inside a mall, in a plaza on Gardiners Road or in an old downtown building with a side entrance, the pin often lands on the main doors or the middle of the lot. Moving it to your own entrance and adding a unit or suite number clears up most complaints about directions.
A contractor working from home should show a service area, not a street address. Claiming a huge region looks careless; naming only the city can hide you from people in Odessa, Bath or Amherstview. The area should match the places you really travel to.
When a business relocates from downtown to the west end, changes hands or rebrands, the earlier profile rarely disappears by itself. Reviews end up divided, and some customers follow directions to an empty storefront. We track down the leftover listing and have it marked as moved or permanently closed.
Many profiles use a broad primary category such as “store” or “contractor” when a precise one exists. Google leans heavily on that choice, so a mason filed under a general heading can miss “masonry contractors kingston ontario” entirely.
The work
We study which categories the businesses ranking for your main Kingston searches have chosen, then settle on a primary and a few secondary ones that fit what you really do.
Unit or suite number, building name where it helps, and a pin on the entrance customers actually use, written the same way everywhere it appears.
Regular hours, statutory holidays, summer or seasonal hours and the early close on a storm day, each entered before it takes effect.
The storefront from the street, the door, the parking or the nearest Kingston Transit stop, and the space inside, so a first-time visitor can spot you beside a snowbank or in a summer crowd.
Easy ways for happy customers to leave a review, such as a counter card or a follow-up email, and a personal answer to every review, unhappy ones especially.
Edits suggested by the public, newly created duplicate listings and sudden drops in calls or direction requests caught early and dealt with.
Done carefully
The standards we hold ourselves to on every account, set down in writing.
A Business Profile is space on Google’s map, lent on Google’s terms. Keep to the rules and it goes on working for you season after season.
Google’s guidelines are public, and most suspensions trace back to one of three habits: a business name padded with keywords, an address that is not a staffed location, or reviews collected with incentives. We avoid all three, and we keep a log of what was changed and when, so any question from Google can be answered quickly.

How we work
Four stages, in the same order for every Kingston client, whatever the trade.
We audit your site and Business Profile and check your positions from downtown, the west end and the towns you serve.
We pick the Kingston searches most likely to bring work and match each one to a single page.
Profile, website, content and listings are improved in order of likely payoff, timed around your busy season.
You receive a one-page summary of the month’s calls, enquiries and rankings, plus the jobs lined up next.
Questions
Put the unit number in the address, place the pin on your storefront rather than the centre’s main doors, and add photos taken from the nearest entrance and the corridor outside. A line in the description naming that entrance helps as well.
Change the regular hours when the season starts and again when it ends, and use special hours for one-off days such as holidays or festival weekends. We keep the dates in a calendar so the edits go in ahead of time, not after the first confused customer.
No. Google expects service-area businesses to hide a home address and list the places they serve instead. We set that up with the communities you truly cover, whether that is Kingston alone or also Amherstview, Odessa, Bath or Gananoque.
Resist the urge to start a fresh listing, because a second profile tends to complicate the appeal. We look for what likely triggered the suspension, correct it, and submit the reinstatement form with proof that the business operates where it says, such as signage photos and a document showing the business name and address. Google decides how quickly it responds.
No separate fee. Profile care belongs to local SEO, which every plan covers, $250 to $550 a month in Canadian dollars, and you may cancel at any month’s end.
Yes. The person who wrote it may not come back, but everyone reading after them sees your reply. A short, specific answer shows someone is paying attention, which counts for a lot in a city where so many customers are new each year.
